One of the hardest things for me to do is to move past a dumb mistake or stupid comment. For example, after saying the wrong thing in a meeting or negotiation, I tend to obsess over my poor choice of words. Which, of course, doesn’t help anything.
I am a baseball fan and I marvel at the ability of professional baseball players to just forget about their strike outs and errors. When a top player strikes out in the bottom of the ninth to end the game, by the time he is in the dugout, the strike out is history. If he were not able to do that, he would not be a professional athlete.
Recently I read a quote from Shaquille O’Neal which I loved:
“To this day, I don’t ever recall missing a free throw shot … Move on … always move on.”
Obviously Shaq missed a lot of free throw shots but what is the point of thinking about those misses? After you reflect for a little bit on why you did what you did (so you don’t make the mistake again), MOVE ON!!
No one can be great unless he/she learns to quickly move past mistakes.
“26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life.”
Michael Jordan
Mental fortitude is critical to success. For some of us it means developing an ability to
forget. To leave the past in the past and immediately move into the now. Because the only time that really counts is NOW. If you obsess about your past, you are only hurting your future.
EXCITING NEWS … THE TELEVISION NETWORK QVC CALLED AND ASKED ME TO COME ON THEIR SHOW TOMORROW (TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15) TO TALK ABOUT OUR SKINNY BOOK SERIES. SO TOMORROW DURING A SIX-MINUTE SEGMENT AT SOME POINT BETWEEN NOON AND 1 PM EST, I WILL BE ON QVC LIVE. I HOPE I DO WELL … BUT EVEN IF I DON’T, I WON’T OBSESS ABOUT ANY DUMB COMMENTS I MIGHT MAKE…
